The American Corner in Zagreb is a partnership between the U.S. Embassy in Croatia and the Zagreb City Libraries. It has been established in cooperation with the Public Affairs Office of the United States Embassy in Zagreb. American Corner Zagreb opened in the Bogdan Ogrizović Public Library (the independent city library until 2007 when it was integrated into the Zagreb City Libraries network) on May 30, 2006, as the fourth American Corner in Croatia. A network of over 700 Corners in 167 countries is operating globally through the partnership between the U.S. Department of State and local host organizations.
Its mission is to provide access to current and reliable information about cultural, educational, economic and political life in the United States and serve as a meeting place of American and Croatian culture.
In a friendly and easily-accessible place the American Corner offers the following services: lending, reference and individualized services with personal assistance to users.
To meet the needs of users who are interested in learning more about the United States, the American Corner contains a rich collection of books, magazines (printed and digital) as well as a multimedia collection of CD-ROMs, DVDs (American Movies), and CDs (Jazzoteka, audio books).
The Corner also offers the Internet access free of charge to its users who need online resources about the U.S. It also offers access to digital resources on mobile devices, such as e-readers and tablets.
The entire collection holds over 5000 items about many facets of American life, history and society with special emphasis on American literature, including the Library of America editions, biographies of important Americans, and American art and music, especially jazz music. Key reference materials on a wide range of American Studies themes are included: encyclopedias, companions, guides, dictionaries, maps, government publications. The entire library is continually being enlarged.
Online catalogue provides access to printed and audio-visual materials: search by author, title and subject headings.
Currently, it is possible to check out selected books for a period of three weeks, upon submission of a valid membership card issued by the City Library and the same rules and conditions apply for it.
In the Bogdan Ogrizović Library and the Zagreb City Libraries network we organize cultural and educational programs which include lectures, talks, presentations, workshops and digital video conferences on popular subjects and important dates and events in American culture and history to address a wide range of interests of young and adult audiences, specialists and lay people alike.
